What it is made of

The source

Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus

The attic workshop stocked from the dissecting room and the slaughterhouse, the candle burning down on a November night, the yellow eye that opens. Yellow skin drawn tight over muscles and arteries, lustrous black hair, straight lips, eight feet of him. And on top of that, whatever the cinema added: the sea of ice below Mont Blanc, homunculi in glass jars, the terminals in the neck and Kenneth Strickfaden's crackling coils.

The vampire of Stoker and Murnau

Broad hands with squat fingers, hair growing in the centre of the palms and the nails filed to a point. Fifty boxes of earth, a brig run aground with the captain lashed to the wheel, flies and spiders bred in an asylum, blue flames on St George's Eve, a Nepalese kukri. And the parallel bloodline: Orlok's bald skull, the rat ears, the endless fingers and that shadow climbing a staircase.

The Worlds of H.G. Wells

Hooded three-legged tripods with the Heat-Ray and the Black Smoke, cylinders unscrewing in a crater, and the red weed eating its way across the English countryside. The Martian: huge head, two great eyes, a beaked mouth and octopus tentacles. On our side of it, a brass machine with a saddle and levers, a sphere of Cavorite, and a face bandaged from top to bottom under a wide-brimmed hat, with a false nose and gloves.

Bandages, Scales and Scarabs

Jackal-headed Anubis adjusting a pair of scales: the dead man's heart in one pan, an ostrich feather in the other; Thoth taking down the result with his reed pen, and Ammit — crocodile, lion and hippopotamus stitched into a single beast — waiting underneath. Around them, the whole burial kit: heart scarabs with spells cut into the base, shabtis lined up in rows, the ankh, the eye of Horus, the djed pillar and the vulture from the royal headdress. And the architecture of the Napoleonic plates: the Sphinx buried in sand up to its neck, Hathoric columns, obelisks and ceilings painted with five-pointed stars.
