Treasure Island

Sea charts with the cross and the bearings written in by hand, three-masted schooners, the sailor's chest with its quadrant and its West Indian shells, the crutch tucked under the shoulder. The blackened paper disc of the black spot, Cap'n Flint the parrot, the skeleton laid out with its arms above its head, working as a compass needle pointing E.S.E. Period engraving, ink on yellowed paper, and the crooked handwriting of a hand-drawn map.

The Four Elements and the Five Phases

The four alchemical triangles: fire points up, water points down, and air and earth are those same triangles struck through with a line. Beside them, Arcimboldo's heads built out of crabs, octopuses and birds, the flint and cannon of Fire, the Platonic solids of the Timaeus and the fifty plates of Atalanta fugiens. And the Chinese half: the taijitu, the eight trigrams of the bagua and the five-phase diagram — a circle that generates, with a five-pointed star inside it that destroys.

Black Flag

Black flags that aren't the generic skull: Bartholomew Roberts standing on two crania lettered ABH and AMH, a flaming cutlass in his hand. Blackbeard with lit cannon fuses under his hat, smoking on either side of his face, and three brace of pistols slung in holsters like bandoliers. A piece of eight bearing the Pillars of Hercules, a three-masted galleon with its stern loaded with lanterns, and the plank jutting out over the gunwale: an object that never existed and that no drawing does without today.

Alchemy and the philosopher's stone

Snakes swallowing their own tails, glass flasks with a sun, a moon or a child sealed inside, a king drowning in a river, a human-faced sun setting over a city, a body with two heads — man and woman in the same figure — and armed knights beneath celestial chariots. Around them, the kit: long-draught furnaces, compasses, crowns, ravens, peacocks and toads. Almost all of it reached us as line engraving, black on white, which is precisely what holds up best once it goes onto fabric.

Roses, bears and boars

White boar with gold tusks, bear chained to a knotted staff, falcon inside a horse's fetterlock, swan crowned at the neck and chained, castle portcullis with its chains hanging, sun with straight and wavy rays alternating, white rose set over that sun, the Stafford rope knot, chained antelope. The background colours are blue and murrey, the mulberry red the Yorkists took up after the death of old Duke Richard. These are not full coats of arms: they are loose badges, button-sized, made to be sewn to a sleeve.
