La guerra de los mundos —título original: War of the Worlds— es una película de acción, terror y ciencia ficción apocalíptica estadounidense de 2005 basada en la novela homónima de H. G. Wells, dirigida por Steven Spielberg y protagonizada por Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning y Justin Chatwin. Contando con Spielberg como director y Cruise en el papel principal, Josh Friedman y David Koepp elaboraron un guion que gira en torno a un trabajador portuario que, junto con sus hijos —Fanning y Chatwin—, intenta sobrevivir a una invasión alienígena de alcance catastrófico. La historia corre desde el punto de vista del personaje de Cruise, dejando de lado los clichés propios de las películas de su mismo género para dar paso a escenas realistas y, aprovechando que el protagonista es padre, involucra temas como la protección de los hijos sobre todas las cosas.

Hooded three-legged tripods with the Heat-Ray and the Black Smoke, cylinders unscrewing in a crater, and the red weed eating its way across the English countryside. The Martian: huge head, two great eyes, a beaked mouth and octopus tentacles. On our side of it, a brass machine with a saddle and levers, a sphere of Cavorite, and a face bandaged from top to bottom under a wide-brimmed hat, with a false nose and gloves.
