What this mug is like

Glossy ceramic, white on the outside, with the rim, the handle and the inside in colour. There are two sizes: 325 ml, the classic breakfast mug, and 443 ml, the one for broth or for anyone who does not want to get up for a refill. It is the only object in the catalogue you look at from close up and at leisure: thirty centimetres from your face, every day, while you wait for it to cool.

The print is done by sublimation and goes all the way round the piece. The ink goes into the material instead of sitting on top of it, so it has neither the relief nor the edge of a transfer. And because the drawing wraps, there is no good side and empty side: it makes no difference which hand you pick it up with, and no difference how it ends up on the shelf.

It is the cheapest piece in the catalogue and the one that best stands up to daily use, so it is usually the first to come into the house: plenty of people try a design out here before wearing it. The sperm whale in profile: the square head up front, the line of the mouth running underneath it, the pectoral fin below the body, the small eye to one side and the tail spread at the other end.

Where this drawing comes from

The head takes up a third of the animal, and that is not artistic licence: that is the sperm whale's proportion. It is what tells it apart from the round-silhouetted whale everybody draws from memory.

It is the design that understands a mug best: an animal longer than it is tall stops being a problem the moment the surface goes all the way round, so here the sperm whale swims around the cylinder and the tail catches up with the head. There is no good side to leave facing out on the shelf, because the animal is whole on every side.

«Moby-Dick» (Melville, 1851) fixed the way we picture a whale, and what it describes is not a right whale but a sperm whale: the vertical forehead, the narrow jaw tucked underneath and the tiny eye at one side of that wall. Melville gives chapter LXXIV to that head and to what follows from having your eyes on the sides: the animal cannot see straight ahead what is in front of it.

What you ask us before buying

Why is its head so big?
Because that is how the sperm whale has it: the forehead takes up a third of the animal. The round-silhouetted whale almost everybody draws from memory is a different beast. Here the proportion is the animal's, not the memory's.
Does the drawing wear off with use?
The print is done by sublimation —Printful's spec sheet says so—: the ink goes into the material instead of sitting on top of it, so it has no relief and no edge to lift. What we cannot tell you is how much rubbing, dishwashing or microwaving it takes: the manufacturer publishes none of those figures and we would rather not make them up.
Which size do I take, 325 or 443 ml?
325 ml is the ordinary breakfast mug. 443 ml feels noticeably bigger and is the one for broth, a long tea or an after-lunch coffee. The price of each size is in the table above, not in the cart.
How long does it really take?
