What this hoodie is like

It is a Gildan 18500: 271 gsm, a two-layer lined hood with a matching drawstring and a kangaroo pocket at the front. It is the only garment in the catalogue with a hood, the one that handles mid-season on its own and goes under the down jacket in January. It is also, by some distance, the one that most often ends up being given as a present.

The kangaroo pocket and the drawstring take chest away from the drawing: the print sits above the pocket, on the top half, which is the continuous surface the garment has. It is a real limitation and better said before than after: if what you want is to see the whole design, the crew neck sweatshirt gives it to you with nothing in front, and the print gives it at wall size.

Inside out, at 30 °C and dried on low. The hood and the cuffs take a good deal longer to dry than the rest, and rushing them with a hot dryer is exactly what ends up shrinking the ribbing. It goes from S to 5XL. In white it leans towards off-white, because of the cotton and polyester blend.

An ammonite shell coiled on itself: three turns of spiral, the radial ribs crossing it from the inside out, the umbilicus at the centre and the open mouth of the last chamber. A fossil drawn as a fossil, not as spiral decoration.

Where this drawing comes from

What is drawn is a fossil, not a pretty spiral: that is why the umbilicus at the centre and the open mouth of the last chamber are there, which is where the animal came out.

It is one of the few designs that lose nothing by sitting above the kangaroo pocket: the spiral is round and fits whole in the upper band of the chest, with nothing to trim off at the bottom. A tall drawing —a ship, a loom— does suffer there. It comes out smaller than on the crew neck sweatshirt, but complete.

The spiral is not traced: it is calculated. It is the logarithmic spiral r = a·k^(θ/2π) with a growth ratio of 2.55 per turn, which is that of the genus Dactylioceras of the Lower Jurassic. Jacob Bernoulli called it «spira mirabilis» in 1692 for precisely that property, and D'Arcy Thompson gives it chapter XI of «On Growth and Form» (1917).

Is the spiral traced from a fossil?
It is calculated, not traced: a logarithmic spiral with a growth ratio of 2.55 per whorl, which is the one of the genus Dactylioceras from the Lower Jurassic. And what is drawn is a fossil, with its umbilicus at the centre and the last chamber open, not a decorative spiral with a few stripes added on.
Where does the drawing sit, with the pocket in front?
Above the kangaroo pocket, on the upper half of the chest, which is the only continuous surface on the garment. If you want it whole and with nothing in front of it, look at the crew neck sweatshirt or the print of the same design.
Is it really warm or is it a thin sweatshirt?
271 gsm and a hood lined in two layers: thin it is not. What we cannot tell you is how much warmer it is than the crew neck one: Printful publishes the weight of this one and does not publish the other, and we are not going to invent the difference.
How long does it really take?
