Oz Before Technicolor
Silver shoes, a Golden Cap good for three commands and no more, and green spectacles held on by two gold bands and a lock. Kalidahs with the body of a bear and the head of a tiger, armless Hammer-Heads that fire their skulls out like a hammer, a white wall with china cows, fences and churches behind it. All of it drawn by W. W. Denslow in the manner of a 1900 poster: thick black outline, flat colour and not a single shadow.
