In Rome, American diplomat Robert Thorn is in a hospital where his wife Katherine gives birth to a boy, who—he is told—dies. Moments after Robert is informed of a plan by the hospital chaplain, Father Spiletto, to secretly adopt an orphan whose mother died giving birth to him. Robert agrees, but does not reveal to his wife that the child is not theirs. They name the child Damien Thorn.

What it is made of

The source

The Engraved Bible

A bear up on its hind legs stealing a honeycomb (the Basel title page, 1569); Ezekiel's ophan, a wheel set inside another at right angles with eyes all round the rims; Dürer's four horsemen in a pile-up rather than a line; the ark as a crate with no prow, the tree with the serpent coiled round it, the two tablets with the top corner rounded off. And the way the Mozarabic Beatus painters drew: bands of flat colour, no depth, outsized eyes and beasts that look cut out with scissors.

Pazuzu and the 72

Heads of Pazuzu with the loop that hung them round the neck: a dog's muzzle, bulging eyes, four wings, raptor's talons and a scorpion's tail. Circular seals for the 72 spirits, drawn like signatures. And Louis Le Breton's bestiary: three-headed Bael on spider's legs, Beelzebub turned into a fly, Amdusias with the head of a unicorn, and Stolas as a crowned owl on absurdly long legs.
