Soles black with grime, feathers in hats, dented jugs and severed heads wearing the painter's own face in Caravaggio. Owls, bats, donkeys in doctors' gowns and witches on broomsticks in Goya's Los Caprichos, and then Saturn tearing an arm off with his teeth and a dog's head appearing over an empty slope. In Rembrandt: beggars, old men in turbans and self-portraits pulling faces, all bitten out with a needle on a copper plate.
