In the spring of 1959, thirteen people were stuck by a violent storm on a small islet near Mallorca. Any of them could anticipate what is about to happen at the small hotel where they’re staying: Elisa Mander, a discreet British tourist, is found dead. What initially seems like a suicide soon raises unsettling signs — it may in fact be murder. Basil, a retired actor once famous for portraying none other than Sherlock Holmes on the big screen, finds himself unexpectedly tasked with unraveling the case. In a place no one can leave — and no one can reach — every guest and staff member becomes a suspect in a crime that grows more intricate and twisted by the minute.

The visual material comes in two layers. Sidney Paget's gives the silhouette: the ear-flapped hunting cap, the Inverness cape, the magnifying glass, the sharp profile; William Gillette's adds the drooping calabash pipe. Underneath, the canon leaves objects far stranger and far more specific: a Persian slipper stuffed with tobacco, unanswered letters pinned to the mantelpiece with a jack-knife, a patriotic «V. R.» shot into the wall in bullet holes, a Stradivarius bought for 55 shillings, a syringe, a hound with phosphorus smeared on its muzzle.

The Matter of Britain

A sword drawn from a stone, and a different one rising out of a lake, with a scabbard that stops its bearer from bleeding. A wide serving dish — not a cup — beside a lance dripping blood; a knight entirely green on a green horse, an axe in one hand and a holly branch in the other; and the five-pointed pentangle painted on Gawain's shield. And a boar with a comb, a pair of shears and a razor wedged between its ears.
