Where the design comes from
The Engraved Bible · Beato de Liébana, Alberto Durero, Casiodoro de Reina y Cipriano de Valera, Matthäus Merian el Viejo, Gustave Doré · 776-1866. Casi nadie se imagina el arca, las tablas o los cuatro jinetes leyendo el texto: se los imagina a través de cuatro nombres con apellido y fecha, del siglo VIII al XIX. Esas planchas son las que Hollywood lleva copiando desde el cine mudo, y son las que hay detrás de estos diseños. Read the whole story.
Here Comes the Bogeyman · Anónimo / tradición oral, con una imagen fijada por Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828) · h. 1445-1799 (folclore); el grabado de Goya, 1799. El Coco no tiene cara, y por eso vale para todo. Goya lo grabó en 1799 como una figura tapada con una sábana de la que solo asoma un zapato, la prensa española del XIX le añadió un saco y un cuchillo, y el cine se lo quedó entero: Michael Myers sale acreditado como «la Forma», el demonio de Sinister se llama Míster Boogie y el niño de El orfanato lleva un saco con dos agujeros.
