The Rose and the Axe
A rose of five red petals with five white ones inside it, a castle portcullis hung with chains, a crowned pomegranate split open, a white falcon holding a sceptre and perched on a tree stump sprouting roses, a phoenix in flames. On the king's side, the horned helmet with spectacles and teeth that Maximilian I gave him, and the drawings in black and coloured chalk on paper prepared in pink. On Elizabeth's side, pearls by the fistful, a sieve, a rainbow and a cloak covered in eyes and ears.
The Engraved Sky
Hemispheres crawling with creatures: a toucan, a flying fish, a chameleon and a bird of paradise in the southern sky; a fox with a goose in its jaws, a scrawny lynx and a war shield in the northern one. Around them, the machinery of measurement: armillary spheres, astrolabes, quadrants, coordinate grids and the ecliptic slicing across the plate on the diagonal. And the human body pressed into service as cartography — Orion in his lion skin, Hercules kneeling upside down, Cassiopeia strapped to her chair.
