Gods, Monsters and Meanders

The archaic gorgoneion seen head-on: tongue out, fangs, snakes knotted at the belt. Unicursal labyrinths from coinage, square and circular, and the meander fret that spawns them. Plus a very specific repertoire of scenes: the eagle at Prometheus's liver, Cerberus with two heads rather than three, Charon leaning on the pole of his boat, the spindle and the cut thread of the Moirai, the frontal owl with its crescent moon and the letters ΑΘΕ, the laurel crown and the fluted Doric shaft with no base.

Public-domain art (Munch, Goya, Fuseli, Bosch, Dore, Hokusai)

Munch's 'The Scream' (1893) · Goya's Caprichos and Black Paintings · 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' · the Great Wave off Kanagawa · Dore's engravings · Fuseli's 'The Nightmare'

El cuadro de Munch es libre. La máscara Ghostface de Scream NO: es un diseno registrado de Fun World.

Based on a True Story

Sea monsters with Latin names swimming across the North Atlantic, compass roses and sixteenth-century map cartouches. Obelisks, royal cartouches and hieroglyphs copied plate by plate from Napoleon's expedition to Egypt; and from Goya, bodies, bayonets, shakos and rows of buttons drawn exactly as he drew them. The twentieth century supplies the hard graphics: fingers pointing straight at the viewer, recruitment lettering, censors' stamps and operations maps covered in arrows.
