Objects before gods: the horn bow nobody else can string, Penelope's loom woven by day and unpicked by night, the olive stake glowing red as it goes into Polyphemus's eye, the ox-hide bag in which Aeolus shuts up the winds. And the mast: a man lashed with ropes while the crew row with wax in their ears, probably the most drawn scene in all antiquity. Around it, creatures that are wholly specific — women with the body and talons of a bird, pigs that used to be men, an old dog lying on a dung heap — and a geometry of ship, wave and oar that holds up when it is cut down to two colours.
