Chi è chi nel poema

The 8 actors announced for the film, and who each character is in Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. All 8 parts exist in the novel under those same names; under each one you get the chapters where they appear and what they do there.

  • The novel came out in 1811 with no author's name — the title page said only «By a Lady» — and with Austen underwriting the printing costs herself; it was her first published book, grown out of a 1790s epistolary draft called «Elinor and Marianne». That the 2026 poster carries Jane Austen's name as its main selling point is two centuries summed up in one image.
  • The only character with the manners of a romantic lead is the villain: that is the structural joke of the book. Willoughby does everything the romantic hero promises — the rescue in the rain, the poetry, the lock of hair — while the two men actually worth having are deliberately unheroic: Edward, shy and short of conversation; Brandon, «old» at five-and-thirty and wearing a flannel waistcoat. Every adaptation stakes its reading there: if Willoughby does not outshine the other two, Austen's mechanism never fires.
  1. Daisy Edgar-Jones Elinor Dashwood

    Chapters 1-50

The «sense» of the title: nineteen years old and the only cool head in her family. Her trial is not loving but keeping quiet: she carries the secret of Edward's engagement to Lucy Steele for months (ch. 22-23) precisely because she promised her rival she would, and does not break even when the news bursts out (ch. 37).

  2. Esme Creed-Miles Marianne Dashwood

    Chapters 9, 42-43

The «sensibility»: sixteen and all feeling. The fall in the rain and Willoughby's rescue (ch. 9) set up the romantic mould the novel is about to take apart; the price is her near-fatal fever at Cleveland (ch. 42-43). Austen does not punish her for feeling — she punishes her for believing that feeling excuses thinking.

  3. Caitríona Balfe Mrs. Dashwood

    Chapters 1-5

The widowed mother, as romantic as Marianne and as impractical. The novel opens with the four women turned out of Norland because the estate passes by law to the son of the first marriage, and with the scene where Fanny talks her husband down from a promised three thousand pounds to nothing at all (ch. 2): possibly the finest scene of miserliness in English literature.

  4. Frank Dillane John Willoughby

    Chapters 9-15, 29, 44

The seducer who does everything the romantic hero promises and nothing he owes: he arrives rescuing Marianne (ch. 9), vanishes without explanation (ch. 15) and finishes her off with a letter dictated by his rich fiancée (ch. 29). His night-time confession to Elinor while Marianne lies gravely ill (ch. 44) is among the most modern things Austen wrote: the cad explaining himself without absolving himself.

  5. George MacKay Edward Ferrars

    Chapters 3-4, 22-23, 37, 49

The shy heir who loves Elinor while secretly engaged, four years running, to Lucy Steele (ch. 22). When the engagement comes out he keeps his word and his mother disinherits him (ch. 37); he is set free because Lucy marries his younger brother, now the heir (ch. 49). In Austen, constancy counts even when its object was a mistake.

  6. Herbert Nordrum Colonel Brandon

    Chapters 8-10, 31, 42-43

Five-and-thirty and a «flannel waistcoat»: Marianne writes him off as old the moment she meets him (ch. 8). He carries the novel's one gothic story — the two Elizas, the ward seduced by Willoughby, and a duel Austen dispatches in a single line (ch. 31) — and he is Willoughby's exact reverse: he does everything and announces nothing.

  7. Bodhi Rae Breathnach Margaret Dashwood

    Chapters 1, 12

The third sister, thirteen years old. In the novel she is barely a sketch — her big moment is letting slip the initial of Elinor's suitor, the famous «F» (ch. 12) — and the movies have been enlarging her since 1995, so if she gets more to do here, that is adaptation tradition, not Austen.

  8. Fiona Shaw Mrs. Jennings

    Chapters 7-8, 25, 42-43

Lady Middleton's mother: vulgar, loud, bent on marrying everyone off and wrong in nearly every prediction. Austen sets the reader the trap of taking her for comic relief and then reveals her as the most decent person in the book: she is the one who takes the sisters to London (ch. 25) and nurses Marianne through her illness like a mother (ch. 42-43).

Every character was checked against the original English text of 1811, which is in the public domain — Austen died in 1817. Chapters are cited with the continuous numbering of modern editions (the first edition ran in three volumes). Leggere la traduzione.

Domande

When does Sense and Sensibility come out?
In the United Kingdom on 25 September 2026 and in the United States on 16 October; the Spanish date is not yet officially announced (aggregators point to 23 October, which is what our calendar lists). Georgia Oakley directs from a screenplay by the novelist Diana Reid, for Working Title and Focus Features.
Who are the Dashwood sisters?
Elinor (Daisy Edgar-Jones), nineteen, the sense; Marianne (Esme Creed-Miles), sixteen, the sensibility; and Margaret (Bodhi Rae Breathnach), thirteen, the one watching. With their mother (Caitríona Balfe) they lose house and income at their father's death, because the estate passes by law to their elder half-brother — and the whole novel grows out of that banishment.
What book is it based on, and where can you read it free?
Jane Austen's first published novel (1811). It has been in the public domain for over a century — Austen died in 1817 — so you can read the whole of it legally at the source link above.
